Living in Wigan

the UK’s pie eating town

About Wigan

Wigan has substantial employment opportunities, outstanding schools, an affordable housing market, and beautiful connections. The town’s population is over 320,000 and is expected to grow by 6.24% by 2030.

Wigan has located Northwest of Hindley and Ashton-in-Makerfield, west of Manchester city centre and north of Warrington. The town stands midway between Manchester and Liverpool along the Liverpool Leeds Canal.

Historically, Wigan’s growth was predominantly due to the industrial revolution, like much of Greater Manchester. But, there is evidence of Brigante and Roman settlements in the area. After the end of the second world war, Wigans textile failed to recover, so many factories and collieries fell to ruin.

Nowadays, although its coal and textile industry has never fully recovered, it is home to many businesses and rejuvenation. With property developments in the area, Wigan is expected to be a powerhouse in Greater Manchester again.
